Walking on the Water

Where We Are

Tuesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time. After feeding the five thousand, the evangelist Matthew takes us to one of the most iconic scenes in Scripture: Jesus walking on the water. And Peter, impulsive and brave, steps out of the boat to meet him on the waves. His initial faith gives way to fear when he notices the wind, and he begins to sink. The prophet Jeremiah speaks of God's promise to restore Israel, turning mourning into joy and offering comfort after grief.

The Word

Jesus sends the disciples ahead in the boat while he goes up the mountain to pray alone. In the fourth watch of the night, he comes to them, walking on the sea). They are terrified: "It is a ghost!" Jesus says: "Take courage. It is I. Do not be afraid." Peter replies: "Lord, if it is you, order me to come to you over the waters." Jesus says: "Come." Peter walks on the water toward Jesus, but when he sees the strong wind, he becomes afraid and begins to sink. "Lord, save me!" Jesus immediately stretches out his hand: "O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" (Matthew 14:31).

Reflect

Peter is the only disciple who gets out of the boat. He deserves credit for that. The other eleven stayed where it was safe. Peter, for all his flaws, was willing to risk everything on Jesus's word. "If it is you, order me to come." He did not step out on his own presumption; he waited for Christ's command.

Peter walked on water. This is easy to forget because we focus on his sinking. But he actually did it. He walked on the impossible surface as long as he kept his eyes on Jesus. The moment he looked at the wind and waves, he sank. This is the mechanics of faith: it works as long as our attention is on Christ. The instant we shift our focus to the size of the problem, we go under.

"Lord, save me!" is the shortest and most effective prayer in the Bible. Three words. No theology, no eloquence, just desperation aimed at the right person. And Jesus's response is immediate: he stretches out his hand. He does not let Peter drown to teach him a lesson. He saves first, teaches later.

"O you of little faith, why did you doubt?" is a gentle rebuke, not a condemnation. Jesus does not say, "You have no faith." He says, "You have little faith." Little faith is still faith. It got Peter out of the boat. It just was not enough to keep him walking when the wind picked up.

Jeremiah's promise of restoration echoes here: God will turn mourning into joy, comfort in the midst of sorrow. The storm does not have the final word. The hand of Jesus does.

Living It

Where is Jesus calling you to step out of the boat today? What is the thing you know he is asking you to do, but fear holds you back? Take the first step. The water will hold you as long as your eyes stay on him.

When you feel yourself sinking, pray Peter's prayer: "Lord, save me." Do not overthink it. Do not compose a longer prayer. Just reach for his hand. He reaches back immediately.

Notice what you are looking at. Are your eyes on Jesus or on the waves? When anxiety rises, consciously redirect your attention to Christ. The waves are real, but he is more real. What you fix your gaze on determines whether you walk or sink.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you walk on the storms that terrify us. Give us Peter's courage to step out of the boat and your hand to catch us when we sink. When we look at the waves and doubt, redirect our eyes to you. Increase our little faith until it becomes enough to walk on water. Amen.
