Wednesday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew takes Jesus outside Jewish territory to Tyre and Sidon, where a Canaanite woman challenges him in one of the most provocative encounters in the Gospels. She is an outsider by every measure, yet her persistence transforms an apparent rejection into one of the greatest compliments Jesus ever gives: "O woman, great is your faith!" The prophet Jeremiah sings of God's everlasting love and restoration of his scattered people.

The Word

A Canaanite woman cries out: "Take pity on me, Lord, Son of David. My daughter is badly afflicted by a demon." Jesus does not answer. His disciples urge him to send her away. He says: "I was not sent except to the lost sheep of the house of Israel." She kneels: "Lord, help me." He replies: "It is not good to take the bread of the children and cast it to the dogs." She answers: "Yes, Lord; but even the dogs eat from the crumbs that fall from the table of their masters." Jesus responds: "O woman, great is your faith! Let it be done for you as you wish." Her daughter is healed instantly (Matthew 15:22-28).

Reflect

This passage is difficult because Jesus seems to rebuff a desperate mother. But the encounter reads differently when we see it as a dialogue that reveals, not conceals, grace. Jesus is not rejecting the woman; he is drawing out her faith so that everyone can see it.

The woman calls Jesus "Son of David," a Jewish messianic title, used by a Gentile. She recognizes who he is before many Israelites do. When Jesus mentions "the children's bread" and "dogs," he uses the diminutive, "little dogs" or household pets, not the harsh term for wild dogs. The woman picks up the image and turns it brilliantly: even the pets eat crumbs from the table. She is not claiming equality with Israel; she is claiming that God's mercy is so abundant that even the overflow is enough to heal.

Jesus's response, "Great is your faith," stands in stark contrast to Peter's "little faith" from yesterday. A Gentile woman outsider has greater faith than the leading apostle. The kingdom of God does not respect ethnic, social, or religious boundaries. Faith is the only currency that matters.

Jeremiah's first reading celebrates the same expansive love: "I have loved you with an everlasting love; therefore I have drawn you, taking pity on you." God's love is not limited to one people. It overflows to everyone who reaches for it.

Living It

If you feel like an outsider, whether in the Church, in society, or in your own family, take courage from this Canaanite woman. Even the crumbs from God's table are enough to heal.

Practice holy persistence in prayer. When God seems silent, do not give up. Press in. The silence may be drawing out a faith you did not know you had.

Examine whether you are guarding the table or sharing it. Are there people you unconsciously exclude from God's mercy? Remember: the crumbs that fall are still powerful enough to heal.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you called a Canaanite woman's faith "great" when you called Peter's "little." Expand our understanding of where faith can be found. Teach us the holy persistence that presses through silence and rejection to reach your mercy. May your table have crumbs enough for all the world. Amen.
