Thursday of the Eighteenth Week in Ordinary Time. The evangelist Matthew brings us to the pivotal moment of his Gospel: Peter's confession at Caesarea Philippi. We heard this passage on the Feast of Sts. Peter and Paul, but today it appears in its narrative context, immediately followed by Jesus's first prediction of his suffering, a sequence that changes everything. The prophet Jeremiah speaks of a new covenant written on the heart.

The Word

"Who do you say that I am?" Peter answers: "You are the Christ, the Son of the living God" (Matthew 16:16). Jesus blesses him: "Flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven. You are Peter, and upon this rock I will build my Church." But then Jesus begins to tell the disciples that he must go to Jerusalem, suffer, be killed, and rise on the third day. Peter rebukes him: "Far be it from you, Lord!" Jesus responds with devastating force: "Get behind me, Satan! You are a scandal to me, because you do not think the things of God, but the things of men."

Reflect

The whiplash from "You are Peter, and upon this rock" to "Get behind me, Satan" is one of the most dramatic reversals in Scripture. In the span of minutes, Peter goes from the recipient of the highest blessing to the target of the sharpest rebuke. The same mouth that confessed the Christ now opposes the cross.

This reveals something essential about discipleship. Correct theology is not enough. Peter got the answer right: Jesus is the Christ. But he got the implication wrong: the Christ must suffer. A Messiah who does not suffer is a Messiah made in our image, not God's. Peter wanted a king without a cross. Jesus insists they are inseparable.

Jeremiah's new covenant provides the prophetic context. God promises a covenant "not like the covenant I made with their fathers." This new covenant will be written on the heart, not on stone tablets. It will be sealed not with the blood of animals but with the blood of the Messiah. Peter cannot yet see that the suffering is the covenant. The cross is not a detour on the way to glory; it is the road.

"You do not think the things of God, but the things of men" is a diagnosis that applies far beyond Peter. Whenever we want the benefits of following Christ without the cost, we are thinking the things of men. Whenever we want resurrection without crucifixion, Easter without Good Friday, we are being Satan's unwitting ally.

Living It

Ask yourself: Am I willing to follow a Christ who suffers? Not just a Christ who heals, feeds, and comforts, but a Christ who goes to Jerusalem to die? Honest faith includes the cross.

Reflect on your own "Get behind me, Satan" moments. When have you tried to redirect God's plan because it did not match your expectations? Surrender your version of the plan and accept his.

Let Jeremiah's new covenant encourage you: God's law written on the heart, not imposed from outside. This is the grace that makes the cross bearable.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, you are the Christ, the Son of the living God. Forgive us when we want your crown without your cross. Write your new covenant on our hearts, so that we may think the things of God and not the things of men. Give us the courage to follow you to Jerusalem, trusting that beyond the cross lies resurrection. Amen.
