Weekday Readings

Love God, Love Neighbor

Where We Are

Friday of the Twentieth Week in Ordinary Time. We return to the Great Commandment, which we heard earlier in Mark's version. Today the evangelist Matthew gives us his account: a lawyer tests Jesus by asking which commandment is greatest. The answer is the same: love God with all your heart, and love your neighbor as yourself. The prophet Ezekiel gives us the valley of dry bones, one of the most powerful images of resurrection in all of Scripture.

"You shall love the Lord your God from your whole heart, and from your whole soul, and from your whole mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. A lawyer asks this question to test Jesus, but Jesus responds with an answer that silences every competing claim. The entire weight of Scripture, every commandment and every prophetic word, hangs on these two inseparable loves. They cannot be ranked, and they cannot be separated. Love of God that does not overflow into love of neighbor is not love of God at all.
