Love God, Love Neighbor

Ezekiel's valley of dry bones is the perfect companion to the Great Commandment. The bones are lifeless, scattered, hopeless. God asks Ezekiel: "Son of man, do you think these bones can live?" Ezekiel answers honestly: "Lord God, you know." Then the Spirit breathes on the bones, and they live. A vast army rises from the grave.

The connection is this: the commandment to love God and neighbor is impossible for dry bones. We cannot manufacture love any more than a skeleton can manufacture flesh. Love is a gift of the Holy Spirit, breathed into us from outside. The Great Commandment is not a task we perform by willpower; it is a life we receive through grace.

When Jesus says the whole Law "depends" on these two commandments, the Greek word means "hangs on" them, like a garment hangs on a hook. Remove the hook of love, and everything falls. All the rules, regulations, and rituals are meaningless without the animating principle of love. But with love, even the smallest act of obedience becomes sacred.

The double commandment is deliberately inseparable. You cannot love God without loving the neighbor God created. You cannot truly love your neighbor without the power that flows from loving God. The vertical and horizontal dimensions of love are one cross.

Notice that Jesus says to love your neighbor "as yourself." This implies that healthy self-love is not selfish; it is the baseline from which neighbor love flows. If you cannot accept God's love for yourself, you will have nothing to give others.

Pray the Great Commandment as a personal intention today: "Lord, I choose to love you with all my heart, soul, and mind. And I choose to love my neighbor as myself." Let these words guide every decision you face, from the mundane to the significant.

Identify your neighbor today. Not the easy one, the difficult one. Love begins where comfort ends. The neighbor you would rather avoid may be the one God is asking you to serve.

If you feel spiritually dry, like Ezekiel's bones, ask the Spirit to breathe new life into you. You cannot love by willpower alone. You need the breath of God to animate what has grown still.
